Dr. Owen qualified in Molecular Biology at the University of Edinburgh in 1978 and in Medicine at the University Hospital of Wales in 1984.
He currently works in the fields of General Practice, Emergency Medicine and Lyme disease. His interest in Lyme disease began when he carried out a survey of his General Practice patients which revealed that those who had served in the military reported a high incidence of tick bites. This lead to the development of a hypothesis published in 2004 entitled Is Gulf War syndrome actually chronic Lyme disease? .
In recent years Dr. Owen has attended and presented at annual Lyme disease conferences in the USA and UK. He is Medical Adviser to the charity LDA (UK) which aims to increase awareness of tick borne diseases.
