Lyme disease can be chronic and severe

Cases of Lyme disease with a mild, uncomplicated primary infection, if treated in time, have a good prognosis. The majority of these people return to good health.

If Lyme disease is not recognised early and adequately treated the outcome is less certain. Therefore, it is in a patient’s best interest to obtain a diagnosis and receive prompt, adequate and appropriate treatment.

Some cases of Lyme disease, especially those which are undiagnosed, untreated or under-treated, may progress to develop the disease in a more chronic and severe form.

Some chronic cases of Lyme disease will develop a devastating illness and will be unable to pursue a normal life, whilst a percentage will ultimately make a certain degree of recovery.

Prompt, early treatment of Lyme disease gives the best hope of averting a chronic and/or severe outcome.

The clinical manifestations of Lyme disease are very wide-ranging and diverse. Symptoms typically shown in chronic and severe cases include: feeling unwell, extreme tiredness, muscle pain, muscle weakness, joint pain, upset digestive system, headache and involvement of the nervous system, including the brain. Symptoms may increase and decrease in a periodic pattern.

There are similarities between Lyme disease and some other diseases caused by bacteria in the same family as Borrelia. This family of bacteria are called Spirochaetes. Another member of this family is the bacterium that causes Syphilis. This is another chronic illness that can manifest in a multitude of ways including mild and severe cases.

Lyme Disease Action is calling upon the government to do everything in its power to prevent people from falling victim to this potentially devastating disease.
