Lyme disease is here in the UK and people don’t know about it

Recent high profile cases in the press and media have borne out the picture that Lyme disease can be a devastating and life-destroying disease. These cases are likely to be the tip of an iceberg.

Prevention of Lyme disease at present must rely on building greater awareness of the disease and how to avoid it.

The current level of information available to the public about Lyme disease is inadequate.

Everyone needs appropriate advisory information about how to remove a tick properly.

Everyone needs to be aware of Lyme disease and how to take preventative measures.

Family doctors do not appear to be familiar with Lyme disease and they have had little information or training about it.

Every doctor and nurse needs to be trained to recognise Lyme disease and be given correct guidance about what to do for the patient.

Lyme Disease Action is contacted daily by people who have typical histories and symptoms of the disease and there seems to be no awareness of their needs.

Lyme Disease Action is calling upon the Government to ensure that full information on Lyme disease and its prevention is widely disseminated to all sectors of society.
