5th December 2005

The following statement is an extract from the WHO (World Health Organisation) report on the European region, full text.

Lyme borreliosis

Lyme borreliosis is the most common vector-borne disease in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, transmitted to human beings by hard ticks of the genus Ixodes. About 85 000 cases are reported annually in the Region, but this is an underestimate. Lyme borreliosis is a multisystem disorder that is treatable with antibiotics and may lead to severe complications of the neurological system, the heart and the joints.
