The family of Alasdair Crockett have issued the following statement.
"Dr Alasdair Crockett was a kind, sweet, gentle and academically gifted man.
Lyme Disease had tortured his mind and his body for years. He leaves behind a
loving wife, brother, sister and mother, two beautiful children and so many
others who will miss him dearly.
Lyme borreliosis is an infectious disease caused by the spirochaetal
bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi which is transmitted to humans by the
bite of an infected tick.
If left untreated, an extensive range of symptoms which affect both
the body and the mind may develop.
Alasdair's symptoms included headaches, neuralgia, cranial nerve
disturbances, heart pain, fatigue, visual disturbances and muscle twitching.
Other sufferers, however, suffer from seizures, psychoses, depression,
anxiety, memory impairment, word-finding problems and violent behaviour. The list is endless.
It is essential that this disease is diagnosed and treated as soon
as possible after becoming infected as it is more difficult to treat
once the disease has progressed to the late or chronic stages.
The tragic death of Alasdair Crockett highlights the dangers of Lyme
borreliosis.
